Chauen was one of the main bases of the Spanish army, and in this city there was the ceremony of transferring the sovereignty of the region to Morocco, lowering the Spanish flag, in 1956. At present Chauen is an important center of tourism, what which has attracted immigrants from other areas of Morocco, mainly from the south. This city is considered as a “Holy City”, and has several places that we should not miss: La Medina, Hamman Square, The Great Mosque, La Alcazaba or Casba, Los Lavaderos.
